Located on a prominent corner site, Mark Williams Architects were engaged to assist in the creation of a family dental surgery and further investigate whether the design could assist in meeting the client’s capital costs.

Following detailed investigations into planning constraints and the cost implications of several strategies, we concluded that mixed-use development, namely the dental surgery and two residential units, would provide the client with the highest flexibility.

 

The final design is composed of a four-room dental surgery and car park at ground level with two 2-bedroom residences above. Separate access to the dental surgery and apartments were thoughtfully combined to help ensure the residential component remains private despite the traffic generated by the dental surgery.

The primary consideration in the design of the dental surgery is the experience of the patient. With dental work traditionally feared by most of us, MWA sort to use the architecture to make the experience more pleasant. We achieved this by connecting the operatory theatres with a meditative landscaped courtyard; this produces areas that are light with a focus beyond the activity of the space.
