Details
Indigenous Early Childhood Education & Care Centre was one of a series of projects under the Queensland Government’s “Best Start” initiative. The project involved the refurbishment of an existing two-room kindergarten building. The new 24 place kindergarten was to be built in conjunction with a multi-purpose community facility offering a range of services, including crèche groups, counselling, and allied health services specifically for the local Murri community.
The existing building was a timber-framed, low-set building clad in weatherboard, face brick, and flat sheet. It was constructed circa 1975. It contained significant quantities of asbestos and upon visual inspection displayed evidence of subsidence in some sections. The client brief and budget extended to stripping the building and ancillary structures back to a shell including the proper disposal of all asbestos and the underpinning of the subsided structure before re-fitting with the new program.
Located in one of the oldest precincts of Toowoomba our services included extensive negotiations with Council to broker an outcome that meet our client’s needs while protecting local heritage, most notably the protection of historic street trees.
Largely guided by the existing structure, the design sort to maximise external learning spaces and punctuate these with built and landscape elements taking on forms, materials, and colours reflective of the Murri culture.
